5 Ways to Beautify Your Textured Walls

Like many of you, I have textured walls. It’s truly a love-hate relationship (I also have textured ceilings, but let’s not get into that nightmare today). I love the way they hide dirt and painting flaws. I love the way they are continuous throughout my home. I love the way they remind me of our old 50’s house with plaster walls. I hate the way they are a beast to patch and paint seamlessly. I hate the way they scratch up your knuckles and elbows. I hate when things don’t stick to them, like birthday decorations and ANY wallpaper (to my surprise).

In this post I’m going to give you 5 ideas on what to do with your textured walls, without needing to refinish or smooth every area of your home.

1. Embrace + Paint

Take the opportunity to turn your existing, drab (if you’re in my house) textured walls, and elevate them with a couple different paint colors and some elbow grease. You’ll be amazed at how the natural movement of the texture helps to drive your final look.

2. Add Some Dimension

Diminish the focus on your textured walls by bringing dimension into the space. Vertical and horizontal pieces of wood or shelving can add a smooth, straight contrast to the bumpy texture of the back wall. I love the idea of painting everything in the same color!

3. Frame It Out

I did this one in my last house, and I loved it for years! Use moulding and trim to frame out your textured walls and give a “faux wainscoting” look. I love this example because they painted a striped pattern above the chair rail, giving the look of wallpaper. Doesn’t it just transport you to the Victorian era with plaster walls and beautiful moulding?!

4. Partial Refinishing

For any accent or feature wall, consider a partial refinishing project. Refinish the top third or so of your wall, apply paint or wallpaper, add a wooden rail, and leave the bottom portion textured in all it’s glory. The best part is, depending on the width of your rail, your lines will be covered up…so no need to be perfect!

5. Enhance with Lighting

Lighting is one of the most underutilized tools to bring warmth, depth, and dynamics to a space. I especially love how this example shows a typical textured wall (nothing fancy), and how this beautiful, handcrafted ceramic sconce can highlight the each stroke and divot. Not to mention, the imperfections in the lamp shades themselves are great compliments to the antiquated wall beyond.
